Lars Peter Hansen established a photographic business in the docks where he took pictures of ships and sold them to seamen and shipowners. Lars Peters fascination for photographing ships was shared by his son Leslie who documented maritime activity at Cardiff up until the mid-1970s. A collection of over 4,500 negatives, taken by father and son between the years 1920 and 1975, is now one of the greatest treasures in the archives of the Welsh Industrial and Maritime Museum. The photographs printed in this book show a small but representative selection of the coasters and colliers, the trawlers and tramps, and all manner of vessels under sail and steam which came to trade in Cardiff - a unique pictorial record spanning over fifty years of twentieth-century shipping.
